書名中有 in 16 weeks,所以作者是一本教科書,剛好滿足一個學期的教學份量。算是很老實,因為之前在Amazon買了一天、三天、一週學會寫論文,還是沒學會,好吧,乖乖上一學期的課好了。
其實內容並沒有那麼的「教科書」,Steve教授是依學術論文的結構分Section(Introducton, Methods, Results, Discussion, Revising, Abstract, Citations, Cover Letter)再分章介紹,所以我就買杯星咖啡從頭到尾看一遍。不只Section是依學術論大的結構,章也是按照學術論文的推演安排,而且是用問句的方式來呈現。列一下目次,大家就知道我在說什麼了。

這本書雖然是想要給論文寫作課當教科書,但是對我這種菜英文卻要寫英文papers的人來說,是很好的手邊書,因為他沒有說教,而是很務實地列出英文的例句,大家可以看一下第一章的第3頁(書的第9頁)Described the Problem Investigated提供五種句型突顯研究的重要性,接下來是強調時間的句型。其實我有點相見恨晚,因為我自己也有花時間整理文章中的好句子但是缺乏系統,有了Wallace教授的整理,以後會輕鬆多了。
這本書還有一個特色,每章後的Common Writing Errors and Corretion,我自己也很愛犯類似的錯誤,不知為何,只要一寫英文就會愛用被動,雖然還沒嚴重到The ball was hit by the boy,但也常一不小心就was conducted,書中的被動與主動語氣的比較,對我是很好的學習。
知道錯還不夠,最好是告訴我怎樣寫才好!Inappropriate Words and Substitutes這個單元就可以滿足我的需求!真的在寫英文時,Word的同義詞根本就沒有用,真的是單字到用時方恨少,怎麼就是想不起來Problem可以用其他什麼字來取代,會更對味,英文會更pro;原來Problem如果用limitation/restriction/drawback/obstacle/shortcoming來表達會更好;第一章的第11頁(書的第17頁)
如果要吹毛求疵的話,不太喜歡書中出現一堆挿圖人,還有排版可以更美觀好讀。
